The game takes a simple, cartoon-like style with the grid, and neither the animation work or the symbols themselves are too visually impressive. There is some unique artwork for the icons themselves, and as such, we can find the fierce sea dragon himself, ships, koi carp and tortoises, but they also share the playing field with gambling symbols such as A, K, Q, J, 10 and 9. And while some slots stylise them to make them fit in a little bit better, Emperor of the Sea does not take that opportunity.
Which is a shame, because the gameplay is fun! The current bet range varies between $0.38 up to $44, which is subject to change when the game releases. Still, it is unlikely high rollers will be too pleased with what is a very low max bet, although more casual players will have fun with this Microgaming release.
Emperor of the Sea does seem to be using the standard Microgaming interface. As such, we can assume that you’ll be greeted with an extensive options menu that lets the player adjust graphical fidelity and what sounds, if any, they want to hear. The Autoplay feature is sadly not as developed as it could be, lacking a loss limit, but you can set a win limit, and it will automatically stop spinning if you activate any of the slot’s special features.
RTP of 96.28% is above the average, but a bit below Top 10 Microgaming casino slots.
Emperor of the Sea Bonus Features
Speaking of bonuses, the game flaunts comes with stacked Wilds, which is sure to make plenty of gamblers happy. Still, other than being stacked, it acts as a regular Wild would – allowing players to replace all symbols on the playing field except for Scatters.
Scatters are used to activate the free spins special feature. Three or more golden ingots will grant you 8 free spins, during which you will see Rolling Reels, in which icons crumble and fall away, replaced by other symbols to chain victories together, and growing Wilds, which increase Wild stacks by one, allowing them to grow up to 15 times their normal size!
Although the review was done before the final release was finalised, what we got from the slot was an interesting journey into the domain of the Emperor of the Sea. While the medium variance and low maximum bet may dissuade profit-minded gamblers, casual players will find this game a lot more interesting. As always, we recommend giving it a spin yourself and seeing if you like it. But we are going to eagerly await the full release, which is coming later in March.
