Ghostbusters Plus Slot Review

Ghostbusters Plus Slot Review

Launched in 2019, Ghostbusters Plus is the second instalment of the movie-themed slot machine from IGT.

The game is one that’s very clearly aimed at those with nostalgic feelings towards the original movie with IGT aiming to capture the excitement of the movie in video slot form.

There are an inoffensive average RTP and medium variance catering the slot to as many players as possible and although it’s not our cup of tea, it’s clear why this approach was taken.

Overall, we liked a lot more than we disliked when playing the slot and for the target market of ‘80s movie fans, we think IGT’s creation has hit the nail directly on the head.

What we liked

It’s hard to dislike a game with such an iconic theme and IGT’s second attempt of the 1984 movie.

The 5×3 play area sees the likes of Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson and Harold Ramis make their way onto the reels to build combinations across the 20 fixed paylines, offering entertaining gameplay in the base game.

However, perhaps our favourite characteristic of the Ghostbusters Plus slot is the bonuses and the sheer number of them – there’s plenty for players to get their teeth stuck into.

A levelled system

The slot offers a level-based approach which we’re big fans of and allows for players to progress through the slot, ultimately reaching level 10 with top perks.

Levelling up is achieved by capturing ghosts (obviously) with players unlocking better bonus features for each ghost captured during the game. Below players can see the unlockable features available on each level:

  • Level 1 – Multiplier Ghost Wilds: 3x, 5x, 10x and Equipment Feature: Proton Pack
  • Level 2 – Equipment Feature: Ghost Sniffer
  • Level 3 – Expanding Ghost Wild: Horizontal, X
  • Level 4 – Equipment Feature: PKE Meter
  • Level 5 – Extra Ghost Wilds: +2, +3
  • Level 6 – Equipment Feature: Ecto Goggles
  • Level 7 – Wild Ghost Expansion: Cross
  • Level 8 – Equipment Feature: Psychogram Helmet
  • Level 9 – Extra Ghost Wilds: +4
  • Level 10 – Tobin’s Spirit Guide

Ghosts can be captured during the Ghost Battle bonus feature, triggered when the ghost symbols land on the central reel. Now, who you gonna call when the ghosts make an appearance? Nobody, that’s who, because one of the ghostbusters will automatically appear in front of the feels with players prompted to zap the ghost up to a maximum of 3 times to defeat it.

When a ghost is zapped, a Ghost Wild (of which there are three variants listed below) is added to the queue:

  • Multiplier Ghost Wild – With 3x, 5x or 10x multipliers
  • Expanding Ghost Wilds – Either horizontal, diagonal or plus-shaped expanding wilds
  • Extra Ghost Wild – 2, 3 or 4 extra Ghost Wilds added to the reels

If the ghost has zero health, it’s zapped for good and the player levels up and gains benefits – got all that? Good.

What we didn’t like

The volatility of Ghostbusters Plus slot machine stands at a very middle-ground medium, presumably in an effort to capture as much attention from Ghostbusters fans as possible.

However, this is a little detrimental to play as players that prefer either high or low volatility slots are likely to become frustrated or bored with the game as if offers neither of the polarising favorites. It’s clear why the medium variance has been adopted, we’d just have preferred one or the other.

Additionally, players looking to spend good chunks of time playing the slot might want to turn the game volume down unless they’re huge fans of Ray Parker Jr.’s original soundtrack. It doesn’t take long before it gets a little too much…

Summary

It’s hard to dislike just about anything Ghostbusters-themed and with a fantastic progressive storyline and level system, IGT is on to a winner with the slot.

Zapping ghosts, levelling up and creating winning combinations across the 20 fixed paylines is incredibly enjoyable with a fantastic layer of nostalgia that won’t be lost on players. The features are well designed and offer an intuitive approach from IGT that we’ve really enjoyed.

With an average RTP of 96.5% and medium variance, the game is good for all players to enjoy, although those that prefer extremes of low or high-risk games will found Ghostbusters Plus in no mans land.

Overall, the game stands as a great tribute to the classic ‘80s movie that fans of the film are sure to love.
